Gordon Bennett is recognised as one of Australia's leading contemporary artists. Since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1988, Bennett has been curated into important biennials and touring exhibitions and the recipient of major awards. The artist has also held numerous individual exhibitions, and has work in the collections of major State institutions, and national corporations.

Solo exhibitions include regular exhibitions with Sutton Gallery, Melbourne, 1993-2006, and the touring exhibition, History and Memory in the Art of Gordon Bennett, Brisbane City Gallery,1999-2000, touring to Ikon Gallery , UK; Arnolfini, UK; Henie Onstad, Kunstsenter, Norway. Selected group exhibitions include Three Colours, Gordon Bennett and Peter Robinson, MoMA at Heide, Melbourne, 2004-05; 12th Biennale of Sydney 2000, MCA, Sydney, 2000; The Third Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, QAG, Brisbane, 1999; Art-Worlds in Dialogue, Ludwig Museum, Germany, 1999; in Place(Out of Time): Contemporary Art in Australia, MCA, Oxford, UK, 1997; TransCulture, Palazzo Giustinian Lolin, Venice Biennale, Italy, 1995; Aratjara: Art of the First Australians, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany, and Hayward Gallery, UK, 1993; 9th Biennale of Sydney: the Boundary Rider, AGNSW, Sydney,1992; and Paraculture, Artists' Space, New York, USA, 1990. Selected awards include the Moët et Chandon Australia Art Fellowship, 1991; the MacGeorge Fellowship, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, 1993; Creative Arts Fellow, Australian National University, Canberra, 1996; and the John McCaughey Memorial Art Prize, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 1997. Bennett's first monograph, The History and Memory of Gordon Bennett, by Ian McLean, was published in 1997. Bennett is to have his first major survey exhibition in Melbourne at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV: A, scheduled for 2007.
